Rega...In my experience top menu bars can work well. Regarding your first objection: my guideline is to have a maximum of 7 or 8 main menu items, which should easily fit in a top menu. The second objection: nowadays it's possible to create drop-down menus with HTML and CSS, which is easily accessible for search engine spiders.
