Okay, so you're already sold on the concept of link building. That's good... everyone knows how valuable inbound links are to your marketing pages and web sites. I know you've heard it countless times but are you implementing an inbound link plan each and every day?

I'm here to say that the majority (9 out of 10) clients I work with are not implementing a cohesive inbound link strategy on a daily basis. The good news is that about 80% understand the importance of inbound links and about 30% actually have plans for generating them, but a mere 10% are actually doing something about it.

Why Inbound Links Are Important
If you want to reach the top of major search engines, then you're going to have to tell the search engines why they should rank you. Do you have unique content? Are you a credible website? Can you provide a good user experience? These are all important questions you should be asking yourself as you consider developing an inbound linking strategy.

Tip #1: Here and Now
Start with an idea of where you are. Regardless of what type of tool you use (free or paid) to evaluate your current SEO status: rankings, keywords, sites linking in, etc., make sure you have a good idea of where you're starting from - and ultimately where you ant to get to. Additionally, plan to check your progress at least once a week. You want to see if your inbound links are helping you success on search.

Tip #2: Begin With Your Competitors
One of my favorite link building strategies is to start with your competitors. Who's linking to them? Are the links from high Google PR sites? What else can you learn about your competitors linking strategies? Start with your competitors or who is already ranked in the number one position for the keyword term or phrase you're optimizing for.

Tip #3: Focus on Anchor Text
Another great SEO tip for inbound linking is to evaluate all of the existing inbound links to your website. Whether you use the simple "link:" code via the Google search box, Alexa, or some other tool, create a list of sites linking in and work with them to apply the proper anchor text to the link associated with your keyword. For example, contacting a site and asking them to update your URL (ex: http://www.yoursite.com) with anchor text (ex: Improve search rankings) can make all the difference.

Tip #4: Quality Content and Social Media
If you provide quality content on your site or simply cover something that would be of interest to your target market, allow others to comment, bookmark and share. Quality content is what search engines like and so will your readers. Develop quality content and encourage others to share it. This creates quality backlinks to your website.

Tip #5: Three Way Linking
Okay, "reciprocal linking is dead". Yeah, I get it.. don't necessarily agree but we wont debate that here. The good news is that we don't have to talk about it since the best linking option is one-way linking. This can be achieved through a 3 way link. Trying to make a difficult to explain concept relatively simple, exchange links with another website but do it using a 3rd site, not your own. This allows one-way links in either direction.

These tips cover a great deal and have worked for me when it comes to helping my websites and blogs, as well as others, build a significant number of inbound links to their website steadily over time.

WARNING: You may be the anxious type, looking to build hundreds or even thousands of inbound links to your website(s) in the next 48 hours - DON'T DO IT! Although I successfully did this in the past, Google is penalizing sites who are too fast out of the gate when it comes to link building. You should look to ad 3 - 5 quality links to your site on a weekly basis. Slow and steady wins the race.

Place your websites link where it can stay for long time so that trust factor of website will boost and also try to get links from authority sites that are having the relevant content rather than link pages.

One other good method i've found that isn't listed here is using articles and press releases which if done right can give you a lot of backlinks.

A tip NOT to do to go along with the Warning above is that there are a lot of companies out of countries like India who offer SEO services & link building. Some might be good but in many cases the find the majority of links they "create" are from weird directories with no traffic and not much SEO benefit!

The biggest point of your article that I think the readres should pay particular attention to is "slow and steady" So many businesses want links now that they do not understand the damage this does to their overall SEO strategy. I enjoy your articles, keep up the good work!!!

I completely agree Slow and Steady wins the race. Fast and Sleezy will end in a trashy Google Score.

I've read all over the place that link building remains the most powerful tool in an SEO's toolbox. This is great article that provides a good overview of how it's done. Thanks!

Do you have any more information as to exactly how a search engine might penalize--and for that matter, catch--a site or blog that is growing its links too quickly?

Florence Erika said...

I think the "content" part is the most important...are you sure that Search Engines won't be able to detect 3 way linking...maybe in the near future?

RankUno said...

Yeah, Actually, Google follows a pattern while giving weightage to any link. Few factors that we know from experience are:
- The date on which new links appear to a site/page.
- The staleness and freshness of a site by link building.
- It calculates a time period between the first link since the page was noticed and the latest link date. This indicates the site's increasing or decreasing popularity.
- A page that is updated while your link on it remaining 'as is' is a good indicator of a relevant and good link.
- Links from .gov, .edu, et. sites are considered more trustworthy.
- How authoritative the websites and the pages linking to the page are.
It is important to take care of the above criteria for good rankings and 'quality' visible backlinks in the long run.

I agree with a few comments here regarding article sites, I did used to think it was about volume but have since realised that is a waste of time and it is better to focus on a few article sites with high page rank.

Great post, cheers.

Great post. There are so many people out there who claim to be SEO or Link Building experts, but I have found very few blogs that account for it in an accurate and productive way.

Great post! I also agree that you shouldn't rush to get 1,000s of links in days - contrary to those delightfully constructed spam mails - it doesn't do that much for your content, and if you are a reputable brand with good content, you shouldn't need to use those types of techniques

I have a question - how does 3-way linking work? I actually never heard of it. Where can I get more info on it?

Thank you very much for the informational article :)

I'm currently signed up for an article distributing service that sends one article to approximately 300 sites. I'll bet about 100 of them get published on average.

With those kinds of return links per article, how often would you recommend that I submit an article?

Michael,

Thank you for this post. Link building is a concept that I have struggled with and this post brings some of my uncertaintly to light.
Prior to joining my current firm, I worked for a larger firm that wanted everything immediatly. I am happy to see that you mentioned a "slow and steady" approach as it seems it would be more beneficial in the long run.
In a world of instant gratification it is hard to tell someone to wait and be patient.
It is time to remember the cliche saying of "quality of quantity" but it rings true.

Google can't penalise you for inbound linking unless you link back or google has proof that you did them. It's logical, otherwise I could go mad on someones website, linking all day every day and destroy it. Not how it works sorry.

This is a very good blog. I have purchased Michael's book and I am just getting started with my SEO for a new travel site.
Question 1. Is the code that MS FrontPage writes messing up anything with the way robots read your site?
Question 2. H1 tags - can someone explain the theory? (Is it just text size?)

Thank you for any answers!
