It seems to me that there is a gulf appearing between what businesses are doing and what they should be doing when talking Internet Marketing.

Many bigger businesses are trying (maybe through paranoia) to keep up with the latest innovations in Internet marketing. This is so they can try and get ahead of their competition in some way. I recently spoke to a larger Digital Media company here in the UK who told me that a large client (household name in the UK) had been trying to integrate Augmented Reality into their Internet Marketing strategy after it was shown to them by the media company. That's great news to see such innovation, but what bothers me is that their website and e-commerce systems are so poor. Surely businesses should be concentrating on getting the fundamentals right when it comes to Internet marketing, rather that looking for the next big thing. The other thing that surprised me when I stated this to the Media company they said they had to come up with ideas to 'dazzle' the client or the client would leave and find a new media company. Therefore addressing the issues with their systems was not exciting enough! The client wanted the 'dazzle' and that's what they got.

When it comes to producing smaller scale 'dazzle' I see in the UK many smaller companies who jump on the 'social media/networking' ladder. Often their efforts (which is great to see and should be encouraged) turn out pretty poor and quite embarrassing with many of them 'missing the point' and just writing dribble or boring articles or statements which fail to engage anyone including themselves in many cases. Maybe this is because of cash flow issues or just lack of understanding.

I recently was asked to follow a local business lady I know on Twitter. Fine I thought, only to be told over the next few days of her exertions to the hairdressers and her annoyance at getting a parking ticket.

Surely a review of her website (which reads even less interesting that the hairdresser tweet) would be an idea. Is it viable in tough times to get distracted and to not utilize time and money better.

I suppose that there needs to be some clear guidelines for small and large business owners to follow, as it can be very confusing. Maybe the respective governments could give some guidance, although given the current economic issues who would listen to them.

I'm also very conscious you may now go and view my website with a eager eye to finding issue with my own Internet marketing.

Oh well. Perhaps tomorrow I'll refrain from ranting about out peoples shortcomings and address my own.

Being one of the top Internet Marketing blogs is definitely a difficult thing to do. You are competing with people who probably are doing blackhat seo tactics. I know that you only do whitehat, but it's hard to stay ahead.
