A question I seem to be getting a lot these days has to do with search engine optimization (SEO) and how long it takes to see tangible results from your focused SEO campaigns. As is true with most things that are not directly in your control, the answer is, "it depends."

Now I know what you might be thinking.  My initial response may appear to be a bit of a lame answer but let me explain.  Ask the SEO experts how long it will take to acquire #1 rankings for a particular keyword and you probably won't get a direct answer.  In fact, some may not even respond at all.  This is because any experienced SEO knows that predicting when a site may achieve a particular ranking is suicide.

What happens if rankings come sooner... or later?  Although SEOs know the best way to improve a website's ranking for a particular keyword phrase, they can never predicts what Google is going to do and how long it will take them to do it. That being said there are a few guidelines to use when determining the competitiveness of a particular keyword phrase.

Assuming you apply some of the basic SEO best practices such as keyword research, on page optimization and off page optimization techniques (link building), you can judge the competitiveness of a keyword by:

1.  The Google PR of sites ranked in the top search result positions. The higher their Google Page Rank the more difficult it will be to outrank them.
2.  The Age of the domain for the top ranked search results.  If the top positions are controlled by sites that have been around for a while, this is another sign of strength.
3.  The number of inbound links to the top ranked web sites for your keyword phrase.  Quality inbound links are directly correlated to rankings.  The more sites linking in to the top positions the more difficult they'll be to outrank.
4.  Number of competing sites.  This number which is displayed by Google when completing a search shows how many other sites have the keyword you're searching for.  The greater the number the more competitive the term may be.
5.  The number of monthly searches.  Generally, terms with higher search volumes are more competitive from a ranking perspective.  Not always but generally.  If you're researching a frequently searched term, chances are that many strong websites are competing for the top rankings.

Now that you have a better understanding of ranking factors, you probably understanding why predicting top search results is difficult.  In my experience, top results can happen anywhere between 30 days and 12 months.  It largely depends on how competitive the term is; how long competing sites have ranked in the top positions; and their relative strength - based on the factors noted above.

Given the complexity of rankings in general and the explanation above, you should have a better understanding of how difficult it is to determine how long it will take to achieve top rankings for a particular keyword.  So the next time someone asks you how long it will take to achieve #1 rankings, you can let them know that it really all depends!

Twitter Marketing Software

One of the most popular questions I get about online marketing is, "How do I make money with Twitter or Facebook?"  This is a question that one could answer with the typical response of "build a following."  Once you have a list of qualified prospects you can market to them just like you would any other prospects or customers.

This inevitably brings up the issue of building followers and that requires some tools, an understanding of your market and a genuine interest in providing value.  I've been blessed with a large Twitter following (@mfleischner) based on the popularity of my book, SEO Made Simple, and my recent media appearances.  I've used TweetAdder religiously over the last year and make my Twitter handle easy to find.

The challenge with this approach is that it takes time and you still have to move people through a pretty lengthy purchase decision process.  What if I told you that you don't need to build a list of followers to make money with Twitter?  In fact, having followers is actually irrelevant to how much money you can make using social media?

Almost every Twitter  marketer will tell you that you will need to have followers first before getting  any traffic from Twitter.  Well, that is very true to average Twitter marketers. They follow other users in Twitter and wish to follow them back, and then send offers. That  is a very time consuming process and personally hasn't produced any significant results for me, and I have 10,000+ followers!

At a recent social media conference I was asking some fellow Internet Marketers about the tools they were using for social media and how they were making money online.  I discovered a new tool, even more powerful than TweetAdder, that promised a solution to the dilemma of reaching individuals at the precise moment they were looking for a particular product or solution - and had NOTHING to do with the number of followers I had.

I want to introduce you a new Twitter tool that rapidly gaining popularity all over the Internet not just because it can do everything you need to succeed in twitter but because of its capability to drive traffic from Twitter to your website even if you have 0 followers.

It’s called TweetAttacks.  Not too many Internet marketers even know about this product yet but those who do are going crazy about it.  Myself included.  I spoke to the programmer behind the product and he is letting me offer it to my blog followers at a $20 discount this week only.  He told me that he's thinking of closing off sales by the end of the week so you'll have to act fast!

Personally I love it because it helps identify individuals who have a defined need and the tool automates the sales process.  Most importantly, this software is white hat.  Nothing nefarious or unethical going on here.  Quite the contrary.  You are simply automating the response to Tweets, promoting products that your prospects need.

Are you still doing the old way of Twitter marketing that  been doing by 99% of twitter marketers?
You've got to try this little wonder and say goodbye to  being average Twitter marketer. For an exclusive $20 discount this week only, click here.

Happy tweeting.

A buddy of mine saw a great list of "Top Marketing Blogs" and said, "Michael, why aren't you on the list?" In addition to being the top ranked marketing blog via Google, I hope that most of you (blog readers) find value in each and every post I've created over the last 4 years here on The Marketing Blog. All that being said I would think that I belong on a list of top marketing blogs.

Okay, maybe its ego talking, but good marketing advice is just that. Attacking different areas of marketing, internet marketing, ppc, SEO, direct marketing, etc. each week has to account for something! Just for fun, I applied to this so called list of top marketing blogs. After about a week I got their reply...

"Thank you for your submission but unfortunately you only scored 49 out of 50 points, not enough to acquire a listing as a top marketing blog. If you would still like to be included in our list of 'top marketing blogs' you can submit a request along with a $99 processing fee..." You gotta be friggin' kidding me! I instantly realized this as another online scam that I want nothing to do with. "Include with a processing fee" - come on. Keep you list of top marketing blogs!

It never ceases to amaze me that these types of marketing scams still exist. Sites feel they can charge whatever they want for others to list their websites, blogs, etc. while providing little if any value. To me it's all a little disheartening. Oh well, I guess as long as the Internet continues to be a source of information, you have to accept that much of it will be arbitrarily created based on someone's willingness to pay.

The only way I would consider such a listing was if it created direct value for my website or blog. Will it provide a link from a high authority website? Does the listing give me additional exposure I otherwise wouldn't have? It's getting harder and harder to take these things at face value but I guess that's marketing for you. The good, the bad, the ugly!

If you've ever had a similar experience online, let me know about it. Sharing your personal experience can help everyone avoid being taken advantage of in the Internet marketing niche.

Internet marketing comes in a variety of shapes and sizes. In fact, it's limitless. I have been honored and blessed with meeting so many amazing people in the Internet marketing world, that I'm always learning new things that can provide value. That's also the case when it comes to affiliate marketing.

I used to think that affiliate marketing was just about making money. And to some extent it is... but only if you provide value to those you're marketing too. Take for example the recent introduction of new stuffed animals, pillow pets. Not only is the manufacturer selling these "pets" directly to potential customers, but so are affiliates. From my perspective, affiliates are adding value because they are increasing the size of the market and creating a competitive marketplace.

Just like placing two fast food restaurants next to one another, affiliate marketing around a given product or service expands the market. This has been scientifically proven and makes sense when you think about the lone pharmacy sitting in the middle of nowhere. You're much more likely to visit a set of stores during a single trip if they are all in the general vicinity.  This also creates healthy competition which raises service levels and keeps costs low.

To me affiliate marketing plays on the same concept. It concentrates resources and creates a competitive marketplace, driving down costs and forcing vendors to provide additional value if they wish to get your business. If you think affiliate marketing isn't a big deal, check out affiliate marketing sites like AffPortal or Clickbank and you'll find a whole online industry of resellers.

If you haven't considered affiliate marketing to be a key component of your online marketing campaign, I advise you to think again. Whether you are a vendor looking to broaden your distribution or an affiliate marketer looking for products to resell, affiliate marketing adds value to the online marketing arena.
